  1. I don’t tweet! (It’s for the birds)

But I AM watching the ISN like a bum on a ham samich!

  2. Ok… Fine… I finally broke down and created a twitter account…grrr. I’ve avoided it up until now but I’m not going to miss out on progress updates on one of the best game franchises in the history of gaming just because I loath twitter.

  3. This will be nothing short of terrific to bear witness to the creation of this game!

Best of Luck to all at Piranha Studios!

  4. Bryan and all the Devs working on this soon to be epic success,

In the case that you get a chance to read this I hope you are considering making a Mercenaries stand alone/ expansion. As much fun as the standard “Be the hero and save the day” scenarios are, I cant avoid mentioning the countless hours…err… months of time I’ve spent playing the soldier of fortune in MechWarrior 4 Mercs. Lets face it, nobility is great if you’re a noble, the rest of us are just looking to get paid and possibly salvage rights =)

  5. Well, I guess I could only stay away from twitter for so long… are you drip feeding us a release date fellas? This is torture… glorious torture.

  6. I never did get much into twitter myself. But I will forward the info to people I know and attempt to generate a little free publicity for you guys. (and because I do not have a twitter account but still want to take part in that poll thingy. .. I pilot a Catapult!) :)

  7. So……dedicated controller (yes, I’m the pain-in-the-ass on Twitter “HumpX”). A “Special Edition” game deserves something cool with it. Don’t you agree?

  8. Oh, and I pilot a Jenner.

  9. Don’t know about Twitter, but ..

Good Luck to all at Piranha Studios!
This will be the best MW ever made!
The Victor for me Thank you ;)

  10. ok damn some good news finally. i think my heart just got going again hope has filled my veins a gleam in these old eyes . to bad the games is XBOX/pc (i did notice the choice in caps) so heres hoping it isn’t getting to simplified. i like a challenge. to date the mech titles that went to xbox crashed and burned. will see how it plays and looks before buying. learned my lesson from the last one lol.

  11. Bryan, did either you or Russ work at Microprose at one point? If so. was it on MW3?

  12. I just read about this ‘free to play’ conversion of the game.. And I must say, Every Free To Play game I have ever played was at best mediocre, and most of them sucked horribly. They either offered very little repetitively boring content, and all of them purposefully make items that you should be able to keep once you have them, ‘time-out’ after a while.

So that nice shiny new PPC you salvaged from the last battle? Well it now only has 200 shots and then it breaks so you have to salvage another one. Of course they will be terribly rare… Or you can always buy one with real cash… Etc.

Of course it might not be exactly that, but the problem with free to play games is that they must include cheesy ways to milk the customer for money. The Free-To-Play model invariably means limiting the game experience for the player so that the game squeezes money regularly out of the player.

So what does this mean for the new Mechwarrior game? Well, I fear it has killed it before it began. I will still probably try it out. But I hold little hope anymore for it due to the limits that the free-to-play model will put on the game.

If you are still on the fence just take a look over the ‘free to play’ game listing. Even try a few of them randomly – so you have a good idea of what to expect. After a month or three of trying out various games in this genre I have little doubt that most people will come away with the same depressed and slightly sickened outlook as I now have for this new Mechwarrior.

I know this is not Piranha’s fault. They do not own the franchise. Instead I point the finger-of-blame toward those who do currently own the franchise. As this type of change is a command type decision. One other thing, have any of you ever seen a sequel for a ‘free to play’ game? I know I haven’t. So does this mean the Mechwarrior franchise is dead? Probably.

Of course the last game I seriously tried in the free-to-play model was several years ago. Perhaps they have improved vastly in the time I have stayed away. But the basic model should still be intact, limit key items which the players want, and force them to play extreme lengths of time to acquire them for limited periods, or pay real money regularly for their use.

Instead of gleefully passing on information about this new mechwarrior to my friends as I have been doing, I will now be in a ‘wait and see’ mode. And honestly I hold little hope. At this point I will try my best to put this current Mechwarrior out of my mind. If it comes along a year or so from now and surprises me with an amazing game, then I will be happy. But I will no longer be a rabid fan, hanging on every little news blip.

  13. oh yeah, and a nice long single player campaign? or even one you can play with a friend or two? That is most likely out the window now that the free-to-play model is here. =/

  14. Tossing out my ShadowKnight’s sword, smashed the bard’s lute, and beat the wizzy with his own staff. I love the Idea of a mechwarrior MMO. The character customization although fun usually has a huge set of pitfalls (for example in many MMOs and even FPS games there are certain specs that are considered to be far superior to other choices and usually some skills that are way over/under powered). Properly balanced it shouldnt be an issue though. As for Merc companies…EPIC…F2P is fine with me, however I would hope there is a subscription based account option to provide players that really like the game some sort of bonus stuff (not directly combat oriented) and with an optional subscription the devs could get some added funding for o i dont know… content enhancement, bug fixes, and possibly new content =) Final thought for now… Information warefare…great plan. I cant wait to see what kind of jammers, dummies and other cool ECM type toys we get to play with. I love when people run jammers, makes it easy to hunt them down +)

    • an mmo is ok, This however is Not an mmo. This is a free-to-play game. they are different. They follow a different model. An mmo I could handle, one with a standard monthly fee. like 15$ a month or something. But free to play is as i described. much much different from an mmo in implementation. Play a few as I suggested, and you will see what I mean.
